Fifteen years ago, Security Council resolution 1325 reaffirmed the importance of the equal participation and full involvement of women in all efforts for maintaining and promoting peace and security. In the years since, it has adopted seven further resolutions on women, peace and security that call for not only the full participation and inclusion of women at all decision making levels, but also the protection and promotion of women’s rights throughout conflict prevention.
Addresses the importance of a gender perspective into UN peacekeeping; called on parties to conflict to protect women from gender-based violence
Addresses sexual violence in conflict and asked the Secretary-General to report on these crimes to the SC the following year
Strengthens efforts to end sexual violence in conflict
Urges States, UN bodes, donors and civil society to take into account women’s protection and empowerment during post-conflict needs assessment and planning
Establishes a monitoring and reporting mechanism on sexual violence in conflict
Focuses on accountability for perpetrators of sexual violence in conflict; stressed women’s political and economic empowerment
Addresses persistent gaps in the implementation of the women, peace and security agenda; identifies UN Women as the key UN entity providing information and advice on participation of women in peace and security governance
Focuses on women’s roles in countering violent extremism and terrorism; improved SC working methods on women, peace and security; and took up recommendations of the the Global Study
